Botanical MedicineBotanical medicine has its origins from ancient cultures. It involves the use of medicinal plant to treat certain disease and aims to return the body to a state of nature so that the body can heal itself. These plants and their compounds are highly effective especially when combining with other herbs. They are also safe if the correct dosage and form is used. The most common forms include tinctures, capsule or tablets, fluid extracts, poultices, essential oils and decoction.

Most herbal medicine has fewer side effects compared to pharmaceutical medications. However, some herbs have potent (powerful) ingredients and should be taken with the same level of caution as pharmaceutical medications. As such, naturopathic doctors are well-educated in the constituents, indications and contraindications of herbal medicines especially in the interactions between medications, herbs and supplements to ensure patients are prescribed with the most appropriate and safe herbs.
