Fertility support

Are you and your partner struggling to have a baby? You are not alone.  Roughly 1 in 6 couples in Canada experience infertility and this number has doubled since the 1980s.  Infertility is defined as trying to conceive after one year with no success. There are many causes leading to infertility including lifestyle and environmental factors, age, poor egg and sperm quality, having sexual transmitted infections (STI) and physiological factors like fibroids, PCOS, endometriosis and hormonal imbalances.  Although some of the factors are non-modifiable, diet and lifestyle modifications and various naturopathic therapies can address these underlying problems, strengthen your overall health and improve your chance of getting pregnant.  If you are considering reproductive technology (ART) such as insemination intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) to achieve pregnancy, naturopathic medicine provides adjunctive support to maximize your chance to getting pregnant.
Besides diet and lifestyle counselling, herbal medicine and nutritional supplementation are often used to optimize sperm motility, morphology, overall counts and DNA fragmentation rates for men and to regulate and balance menstrual cycle and optimize egg quality for female.  Acupuncture is frequently used as well to tonify and nourish the body to prepare for conception and maintain pregnancy.

Prenatal Care

Picture
Aside from educating you how to choose a good quality prenatal supplement, Dr. Cheung will provide you with prenatal support for symptoms and complications that may arise during pregnancy.  These could include symptoms like morning sickness, heartburn, edema, muscle cramps and aches to medical conditions like gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure) and depression. She will work together with your family doctor, midwife, or obstetrician for any complications that may have arisen during your pregnancy to ensure you will have the most enjoyable and healthy journey.

Post-natal care

A new life has begun not just for your baby but for you as well. Dr. Cheung will provide you with naturopathic support for any challenges that may arise during this transition.  This might include breastfeeding issues like breastfeeding techniques, lack of lactation and mastitis (breast inflammation); emotional issues like postpartum depression or simply nutritional recommendations for post-natal care.
