Do you need supplements?

In many ways, supplements are to humans what fertilizer is to plants. When you give a plant adequate amounts of sunlight and water, it will survive. Adding some nutrient-rich fertilizer, the plant will thrive.

The same principle applies to humans. A healthy, balanced diet supplies the body with sufficient nutrients to carry out routine tasks. Supplements such as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and phytochemicals enrich the body's internal environment to fortify cellular protection, repair, and regeneration and support the renewal process.

Supplements play an important role in high-risk groups.  For instance, adults with osteoporosis require extra Vitamin D and calcium to maintain proper bone health. People suffering from Crohn’s or Celiac disease require extra nutrients as their body cannot absorb food properly. People suffering from iron and B12 deficiency must take supplements for the body to function properly.  Younger children, older adults and pregnant women also need extra supplementation.

Aside from age and certain health condition, there are other external factors that can deplete nutrients.  Alcohol consumption depletes most vitamins and minerals plus antioxidants.  Allergies and infections deplete Vitamin A, C and zinc. Smoking and exposure to air pollutants and other toxins depletes antioxidants.  Stress depletes ALL NUTRIENTS especially B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Although nutrients are beneficial to your body in many ways, it is important to remember supplements are never a substitute for a well-balanced and healthy diet.
